"Kiriko" Tarako, which has been popular since the Meiji period, is made from salted pollack roe, and is a popular ingredient used throughout Japanese cuisine. It can be eaten as is, grilled and used as a filling for rice balls or ochazuke, or mixed with squid as a snack with sake. Tarako, which is also used as an ingredient in tarako spaghetti, is called "momijiko" in some regions.
